Casa de Esparanza Work
During my high school experience, I have taken part in National Charity League, which is a group where moms and daughters work on service projects together. One of the service projects I worked on was going to Casa de Esparanza. Casa de Esparanza is a place where college graduates sign up to take care of young foster kids. They are provided a home in a small gated community that is owned by Casa de Esparanza, and they basically act as moms for the kids they are caring for. When I went to Casa, I was helping out with playtime for the toddlers. This included preparing things like crafts ahead of time and playing with the kids once I got there.
This service experience was really interesting for me because it was fascinating to hear about how the kids ended up at Casa, and it was also interesting to hear about why the caregivers decided to work there, especially because they had just graduated college and were still relatively young.
I think that by working at Casa de Esparanza, I think I fulfilled the CAS outcome of "demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance". All of the kids living in the Casa homes were part of the foster care system and living there temporarily, and by taking part in this service activity, I was helping the kids in a small way. By taking time to play with them, I was making their day brighter. Even though this is small engagement with kids in the foster care system, I think that me working locally with these kids is a small way to engage with this issue.
