Houston Food Bank Work
Houston Food Bank Work
During my Junior year of high school, I worked at the Houston Food Bank. The Houston Food bank is one of the largest in America and provides food to families who cannot afford it. While I was at the Food Bank, I did several things. One of the things that I did was pack backpacks with non perishable foods for kids to take home. These backpacks are part of a program the Food Bank has that provides food for kids who get all their meals during the week from their school but don't have enough food at home. Another thing I did while at the Food Bank was organize food at the conveyer belt. The conveyer belt at the Houston Food Bank is what transports food throughout the food bank to be stored. My job was to put foods into boxes by category, like canned fruit, for example, and put that box on the conveyer belt.
The CAS outcome I fulfilled by working at the Houston Food Bank was "Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance". By packing the backpacks for the kids, I was engaging with the issue of child hunger. Thousands of kids in Houston go home and are hungry, and by working at the Houston Food Bank, I was able to help a number of those kids out. I found it really interesting to learn about this program at the Food Bank. Beforehand I didn't realize how many kids relied on their schools for breakfast, lunch, and dinner because they didn't have any food at home. This experience made me extremely grateful that I am in a situation where I have food in my refrigerator and don't have to worry about where my next meal is coming from. I would definitely volunteer at the Houston Food Bank again because I really felt like I made an impact while I was there.
